Emergency Generators: Stronger Than The Storms

When big storms approach, there are two kinds of people: the ones wondering how much frozen food they’ll be throwing out in a couple of days, and the ones stocking up on ice cream without a care in the world. That may be a slight exaggeration, but the fact is that having a standby generator for your home means you get to worry less about being without power for any length of time.

Before I came to Oliver, I worked for a utility company that served an area of the state where power outages are frequent and severe all summer long. I can’t tell you how many panicked phone calls I received that a tree had fallen on power lines and knocked out the electricity. On a good day, I could tell people that the line crews were handling it and would have the power restored in a few hours. On a bad day, there were many phone calls that ended in tears because a customer had been stocking up for a big party and everything in their fridge would need to be thrown away because the wind and debris damage was severe enough to take days to repair. And this was before  Superstorm Sandy had all of New Jersey camping out at gas stations trying to fill portable generators.

Automatic whole home standby emergency generators are different. It hooks into your existing gas or propane service and will generate enough power to run your entire house, not just the appliances you remembered  to set up on the transfer switch for a portable generator. And the “automatic” part is really great, because it will run your home even if you aren’t there to  flip the switch. So no more coming home from vacation to fermented orange juice, which happened to me a few years ago – and yes, it was as disgusting as it sounds!
