Signs That You May Need a Heat Pump Service or Tune Up

We all enjoy being comfortable in our own home. After all, that’s what home is for. Home is the center of our family life, where we get to relax and spend quality time with the ones who matter most to us. While we’re busy kicking back and entertaining ourselves, our heat pump services us. It’s hard at work keeping us cool in the summer, warm in the winter, and saving us money.

Everyone appreciates getting some attention from time to time, and the same is true for your heat pump. Remember that your heat pump is saving you dollars by giving your furnace a break in winter, and your air conditioner some time off during the warm summer months. As a result, your heat pump is working in all four seasons, year-round. To keep it working at peak form, it’s best to give your heat pump a maintenance tune-up each spring and fall. That’s where Oliver Heating and Cooling is able to help!

Heat Pump and HVAC Maintenance Saves You Money

The average lifespan for a heat pump that’s well maintained is about 15 years. There are things you can do to extend the longevity of your HVAC system and heat pump.

1. Check air filters.

Be sure to check the air filters every month, and change them regularly. You want to change them at least every 2 to 3 months. However, if you have asthma or allergy sufferers, smokers, or pets in your home, you want to change air filters monthly.

2. Set your heat pump on the “auto” setting.

Your heat pump will last longer and work more efficiently if you use the “auto” setting rather than the “on” setting. The “on” setting makes the unit run continuously.

3. Maintain a regular heat pump service and tune-up schedule.

The US Department of Energy reports that the difference in electric costs between a well-maintained and a poorly-maintained heat pump is about 10 to 25 percent annually. Get regular heat pump tune-ups from Oliver and save yourself a considerable amount of money over the course of a year.

Look for Signs that Your Heat Pump Needs Service

You want to watch for signals that your heat pump may need to be maintained, repaired, or replaced. At Oliver, we’ve been providing home comfort solutions for almost 50 years, so we have the knowledge to assist you. We’re happy to answer any questions you may have about your heat pump, HVAC, electrical, or plumbing needs.

• Is your heat pump nearing 15 years old?

If it’s running with less efficiency, this could be a sign that you need a heat pump tune-up, repair, or replacement.

• Are there strange smells?

Your unit may have mold growing, and you don’t want to spread that through your home’s air. If you detect a burning oil smell, it could be a broken or worn out belt in your heat pump.

• Can you hear strange sounds?

When your heat pump is running correctly, you should only hear a soft humming sound. If you’re hearing rattles, groans, or anything that sounds off, it’s a sign that your heat pump needs to be looked at.

• Is your electric bill higher than usual?

If your heat pump is cycling off quickly, it forces your air conditioner or furnace to operate more. You’ll see higher electric bills as a result.

• Is your heat pump running but not cooling or heating your home well?

That’s a sure sign you’re in need of heat pump service. If you feel a strong air flow but the air temperature is wrong, give us a call. It could be something simple like a new thermostat, but it could mean your heat pump needs to be serviced.
