At Oliver, we offer more than just plumbing, electrical, and HVAC services. We can also help you harvest the energy of the sun and turn your home into a solar-powered home. But you may be asking yourself, “Is solar energy right for my home?”
We’re here to help you find an answer. Here are some things to consider:
Sun Exposure
More sun means more solar energy for your home, so before you decide to invest in solar panels, consider how much sun your home gets on a yearly basis. If you live in a heavily wooded area, your home may not be a great candidate for solar energy.
Your Roof
Since solar panels will be installed on your roof, it’s important that the roof is free from shade and that it’s facing the south. A shady roof or a roof that faces other directions (especially the north) won’t absorb as much sun exposure. Your roof also has to be large enough to accommodate the panels (for size confirmation, call us at 1-888-810-2681).
Also consider the material that makes up your roof. A roof made of slate or clay tiles isn’t well-suited for solar panels, but a composite or concrete roof is perfect for the application.
Solar Panel Life
Solar panels last about 20-25 years, so think about the condition that your roof is in before you install them. If your roof is already 10-15 years old, you may want to consider installing a new roof before investing in solar panels. That way, you know your roof will stay in good condition for the life of your solar panels.
How Long You Plan on Staying
Solar energy is a big investment, so before you say yes, consider how long you’re planning on staying in your home. If you’re thinking about moving in the next couple years, you may want to bypass solar panels, but if your home is one you want to stay in for awhile, solar energy may be a great option.
Tax Rebates/Incentives
Some states offer tax rebates or tax incentives if your home is a solar-powered home. Before you decide on solar services, look into your local tax policies. You may be able to save more than you originally thought.
