Do You Need to Buy an Energy Efficient Heater for Your Home?

Energy Efficient Heater Meter

One of the reasons many homeowners in the Delaware Valley area dread the frigid winter months is because they have come to expect overwhelming heating bills. If you’re tired of skyrocketing bills during the coldest months of the year, you might want to consider investing in an energy-efficient heater. One of those units will slash your monthly bills, and the team at Oliver could have your new heating system up and running before you know it.

What Is an Energy Efficient Heater?

When determining how efficient a heating system truly is, you must consider some of the science behind the technology. All heating systems use some source of energy to heat air or water. The amount of energy that is wasted during that process will affect the efficiency of the system. If 100% of the energy is turned into heat, then that system would be considered 100% efficient. Luckily, some of the leading HVAC manufacturers have made amazing breakthroughs in recent years.

Benefits of an Energy Efficient Heater

There are many different reasons why you might want to upgrade to an energy-efficient heater. For many homeowners, the biggest benefit is the amount of money that they save every month. Depending on how often you use your heater and how well insulated your home is, an energy-efficient unit could potentially pay for itself within a matter of years. Your new heater is also going to waste much less energy, and that will greatly reduce your family’s carbon footprint. As an added bonus, most modern heaters are incredibly well-built, and they often last even longer with the proper maintenance.

Broken Heater ColdSigns You Need a New Heater

Your heating bill is naturally going to change throughout the year, but you should investigate further if it suddenly skyrockets. A huge energy bill that came out of nowhere could be a sign that your heating system is nearing the end of its lifespan. Your heater might also need to be replaced if it can no longer keep your home at a consistent temperature. Older units often have to stay on constantly or repeatedly turn off and on when the weather is particularly cold outside. Some of the other signs you may need a new heater include unusual smells coming from the vents, loud noises, and poor indoor air quality.

5 Benefits of Home Insulation

home insulation

When you think of insulation, you probably think about how insulation can keep your home warm in the winter. In reality, though, insulation is beneficial for your home all year round. At Oliver, we offer a variety of home insulation materials for your attic, walls, floors, basements, and more. It’s is a great investment, and here’s why:

Comfort

Because insulation will keep your home warm in the winter and cool in the summer, you and your family will stay comfortable all year round without having to crank up your HVAC unit, rely on extra blankets, invest in fans, or settle for a too-hot or too-cold home.

Energy Savings

Did you know that a home that is under-insulated or not properly insulated can lose between 20% and 30% of its energy? Air leaks around your windows and doors or in your attic or basement can waste your energy. That means that your heater and your air conditioner will have to work harder to keep your home warm or cool (and a harder-working HVAC system means a higher energy bill). With proper home insulation, you can keep your home efficient and keep your energy bills down.

Sound

No one likes to hear someone snoring in the room above them, and that’s where home insulation comes in handy. Home insulation helps to absorb the sounds that bounce off of your walls and floors, making your home a quieter place to live and relax.

Carbon Footprint

If you’re interested in living a “green” lifestyle, the right insulation (and the right amount of it) can help you do that. Since insulation allows you to use less energy and in return, produce fewer emissions, you’ll reduce your carbon footprint and your impact on the environment. Plus, we can help you pick out the right type of insulation that has the smallest environmental impact.

Resale Value

When it comes to insulation, not many people think about its resale value. If you’re thinking about selling your home in the next five years, updating your insulation can be the difference between a fast sell and a slow sell.

If you’re interested in the many benefits of home insulation, don’t hesitate to contact our HVAC specialists.

Blog BONUS

Now that you know the benefits of insulation, let’s talk about the other piece of the puzzle – air sealing. The right insulation is crucial, but if you’re leaving escape routes for your heated air, you still won’t get the results you’re looking for. Take a look at this case study to learn more:

12 Ways to Save Electricity

HVAC maintenance

At Oliver, we know how important the environment is and how many people are working hard to reduce their carbon footprint. That’s why we put together a list of 12 tips on how to save electricity (and in return, save money):

1. Block/use the sun

In the summer, direct sunlight on your house makes it warmer, which means your air conditioner will need to work harder to cool it. Use your blinds and invest in thick curtains to block sunlight out during the day. In the winter, open your blinds or curtains to let the sun warm up your house.

2. Unplug your appliances

Even when you’re not using them, appliances that are plugged in can still use electricity. The best thing to do is unplug any appliances that you’re not using.

3. Don’t overpay for utilities

In Pennsylvania and many other states, you can choose your own electric provider, so shop around for the one with the best rates. You may be able to save more than you think.

4. Use/install ceiling fans

Ceiling fans make you feel nearly four degrees cooler in the summer and can push warm air downward in the winter to make you feel warmer. This means you won’t have to run your heater or air conditioner as often, which saves electricity.

5. Put lamps in the corner

When you put your lamps in the corner, their light will be reflected off of two walls instead of just one, which makes the room brighter and lessens the amount of lamps you need.

6. Keep your home warmer/cooler

In the winter, lower your thermostat a few degrees and you’ll save money on your energy bills. In the summer, turn it up a little.

7. Hang your clothes to dry

Instead of wasting energy using your dryer, hang your clothes to dry on a clothing rack or outside on a clothing line.

8. Switch light bulbs

Switch out your incandescent light bulbs to ones that are energy efficient. These days, bulbs like LEDs, CFLs, and halogens all use less energy than traditional fluorescent ones and also last longer.

9. Ditch the oven

Instead of a traditional oven, use a microwave or toaster oven to heat up your leftovers. You’ll use a lot less electricity.

10. Fill your freezer

Freezers work more efficiently when they’re full, so try to keep your freezer fully stocked. You can even put frozen containers of water in there just to fill it up.

11. Service your HVAC unit

Each year, have a professional (like our HVAC maintenance specialists!) inspect your HVAC unit and make sure that it’s running efficiently. If it’s not, you could be wasting energy.

12. Run full loads

Like freezers, dish washing machines and clothes washing machines both are more efficient when full, so make sure you fill them both before you run them through a cleaning cycle.
