How To Fix An Air Conditioner Not Cooling

If you have noticed that your home just isn’t staying cool in the warmer months, you may have an issue with your air conditioner. There are several possible issues that can occur that would prevent your AC unit from functioning properly. There are a few simple checks you can perform that may help you identify the issue. Our guide will walk you through how to fix an air conditioner that’s not cooling.

Tools Needed

  • Flashlight
  • Spray bottle
  • Dish soap

Step by Step Directions:

If Your Air Conditioner is Not Turning On at All:

  1. Check your thermostat and make sure it is functioning properly. Many use batteries that may need to be replaced.
    • Lower your temperature 5-10 degrees and see if that makes the unit function.
  2. Check to ensure your air conditioner is getting power from the breaker.
  3. Check for frozen lines and coils around the air conditioning unit.
  4. If everything seems to be normal, you may have an issue with your motor or compressor that a professional would have to repair or replace.

If Your Air Just Isn’t Cool Enough:

  1. Check the air filter and make sure it is not clogged with dirt. This restricts airflow and can also cause coils to freeze.
  2. Check your vents to make sure they are not closed and air is coming out.
  3. Make sure there is no dirt or debris clogging the vent/register.
  4. Check around the outdoor compressor and make sure no leaves, branches, or other obstructions surround the unit.
  5. Check to ensure the outdoor compressor fan is spinning. If not, it either has no power or the motor may be broken.
  6. Listen closely to your AC unit. If there is a leak, you may hear a hissing sound.
  7. Perform a soap solution test on the lines by spraying a solution of water and dish soap and look for bubbles.
    • Mix 1 part dish soap and 4 parts water in a spray bottle.
    • Soak the lines generously and wait to see if bubbles develop.
  8. If none of the above yielded results, you may need a refrigerant recharge that can only be performed by a licensed professional
