How To Install PEX Plumbing Connections

PEX (cross-linked polyethylene) tubing is a popular choice for modern plumbing because it’s flexible, easy to install, and resistant to corrosion. Whether you’re replacing old pipes or installing a new water line, PEX connections can be a great DIY project. Our plumbing pros at Oliver are here to help you learn how to install PEX plumbing connections properly.

Plan Your Plumbing Layout

Before cutting any PEX tubing, sketch your layout and determine where you’ll need fittings and connections. Make sure to leave enough slack in the tubing to account for expansion and movement.

Cut The PEX Tubing

Using a PEX pipe cutter, make clean, straight cuts at the desired lengths. Avoid using a hacksaw or dull blades, as uneven cuts can lead to leaks.

Insert The Crimp Ring Or Clamp Ring

Slide a crimp ring or clamp ring over the end of the PEX tubing before inserting the fitting. Ensure it’s positioned about 1/8″–1/4″ from the tubing’s edge.

Attach The PEX Fitting

Insert the PEX fitting fully into the tubing until it reaches the shoulder of the fitting. This ensures a secure connection.

Secure The Connection

For crimp rings: Use a PEX crimping tool to compress the ring around the tubing. Ensure the ring is evenly compressed and check it with a crimp gauge if necessary.
For clamp rings: Use a clamp tool to tighten the ring until it is securely fastened.

Test Your Connections

Once all PEX connections are in place, turn on the water supply and check for leaks. If you find any leaks, you may need to re-crimp or tighten the connection.

Secure The PEX Tubing

Use pipe supports or straps to secure the PEX tubing to walls or framing, ensuring proper routing without kinks.
