Install a New Gas Water Heater
Water heaters are an essential aspect of any home, and it’s important that you get the right water heater for your household. At Oliver, we do much more than sell and install water heaters. We provide our customers with all the information they need to make a decision that will serve them well in the years ahead. When you call Oliver about a new water heater, we’ll send an experienced and certified plumber to your home to evaluate it and your household usage along with your preferences. We’ll then answer any questions that you may have, explore all your options with you, and help you make the right choice for you. We’ll then install your new gas water heater with precision, calibrate it, and ensure that everything is perfect before we clean up our work area and leave.
How a Gas Water Heater Works
There are two core types of gas water heaters available: tank and tankless. Conventional water heaters tend to have a 40- to 60-gallon tank that is used to store the water supply. Cold water is denser than hot water, so as cold water is forced into the system to replenish the supply, it goes to the bottom. The gas burner is located below the sealed tank and warms that cold water. It is controlled by a gas regulator assembly, which includes a thermostat. Burning gas does create toxic gases, and those are exhausted through an exhaust flue that runs through the center of the tank. The gases are then released into the atmosphere via a chimney or vent pipe. On-demand systems do not have a tank. Instead, the gas burner heats a pipe, and the cold water runs through that pipe and is heated as you need it.

Gas vs. Electric Water Heaters
Gas and electric water heaters are quite similar in their overall designs. The main difference is in how the water is heated. Gas units have a pilot light and a gas burner. Electric units have an electric starter and a heating element. Electric water heaters are cleaner and safer as there is no toxic byproduct. They cost less up front, are more efficient in their operation, and are available in a wider range of sizes. While a gas water heater will cost more up front, it will be cheaper over the life of the equipment due to the lower cost of natural gas. Another benefit of gas is that a burner heats the water more quickly than a heating element, and therefore, gas units are able to recover from usage quicker.
