Types of Electric Water Heaters
The most prevalent type of electric water heater is the conventional storage water heater, which stores and heats water in a tank. An increasingly popular option are on-demand systems that only heat water as you need it. There are also heat pump water heaters. While these use a storage tank as well, they are much more efficient because they transfer heat energy to the water as opposed to directly heating the water.
Traditional Tank Storage Water Heater
Tank water heaters are relatively inexpensive to purchase and install, and they’re available in many sizes, which makes them easy to size to your particular home. Their shortcoming is that their inefficient since they have to heat water in advance of you needing it and continue to heat it until you do.
Tankless Water Heater
Tankless water heaters cost more than conventional water heaters to purchase and install, but they have a number of intrinsic advantages. Since they only heat the water you need, they cost less on a monthly basis. They also last longer and so cost less over the life of the equipment, and it makes your home more comfortable to have a practically endless supply of hot water that is available to you quickly.
Heat Pump / Hybrid Water Heater
A heat pump water heater is similar to a conventional water heater in that it stores water in a tank, has to get it warm before you need it, and has to keep it warm. The difference is that it uses a heat pump as opposed to an electric heating coil. Heating coils provide heat directly. Heat pumps transfer heat energy to the water from the ambient air, which makes them much more efficient. These are often called hybrid systems because they can be the same heat pump that both cools and heats your home.
